On Friday 9th March South School hosted some special visitors!. “Introducing the Kahurangi Dance Company”. The group consists of 6 people (two ladies and four men). The company came to school to teach us about some of the different Pacific Island in Oceania, including Hawaii, Fiji; Samoa, Rarotonga; and Aoteroa. First they talked about Hawaii. To say hello in Hawaiian it is Aloha (a-loh-hah).Then they did a traditional dance from Hawaii, as well as being in traditional outfits. The next island they visited was Samoa.The Samoan greeting is talofa (ta-loaf-a).They then dressed up in Samoan outfits they had made their self's and did a dance they learnt while travelling in Samoa. Then they went backstage and got changed while one of the ladies talked to us about Rarotonga. They told us the Rarotongan word for hello is Kia Orana.They told us a story about they guys who sailed from Rarotonga to Aoteroa (New Zealand). They wore grass skirts and showed us some war weapons.
